Whitegoods: What are the different fridge styles?

Your refrigerator is a major purchase, and you want to make sure you’re buying the right product for your home. But with so many different options on the market, how can you be sure that you’re choosing a fridge that truly meets your needs?

We’ve put together this guide to the different fridge styles available, to help you make an informed decision.

Different styles of refrigerator

1. Top mount

A top mount fridge is the most common type of refrigerator. In this traditional design, the fridge is divided into two compartments, each behind a separate door. The top is the freezer, and this is usually the smaller of the two compartments. The bottom compartment is a cooler for fresh food and takes up more space.

2. Bottom mount

A bottom mount fridge reverses the top mount design. In this model, the fresh food compartment is located at the top, with the freezer on the bottom. The freezer in a bottom mount fridge tends to be larger than the freezer in a top mount design, providing you with more space for frozen food.

3. Two-door

Two-door refrigerators are also commonly known as side-by-side refrigerators. It’s easy to see why when you look at their design. Instead of the fresh food section being above the freezer or vice versa, the two compartments are literally arranged side by side, with two large doors that run from the top to the bottom of the fridge. They provide easy access to all your fresh and frozen food and have plenty of freezer space.

4. French door

A French door refrigerator is a stylish design. The fresh food compartment is behind two vertical doors, with the freezer compartment below. The French door refrigerator traditionally has three doors, but some models now include an additional drawer which can be set to different temperatures depending on your needs.

What are some of the most common fridge accessories?

When shopping for a new refrigerator, you probably also want to consider the accessories it comes with. Some of the most popular accessories include:

  • Ice dispenser. Many modern fridges come with their own ice dispensers built into the front of the fridge. Some also have the option of dispensing cool drinking water.
  • Air purifier. A fridge air purifier helps to neutralise smells from your fridge, keeping your room fresh and ensuring no food gets contaminated with strong odours.
  • Thermometer. A fridge thermometer is a really useful item to make sure your fridge is always at the correct temperature for keeping food fresh and safe to eat.
